United Kingdom: Manchester attack claimed by IS May 23 /update 3

The Islamic State claims responsibility for the Manchester terrorist attack on May 23

Informational

Event

On Tuesday, May 23, the Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack in Manchester. The terrorist group issued the statement through one of its official outlets on social media. According to their communiqué, one of their member placed explosives in the middle of the crowd. The group also threatened to carry out additional attacks.

The claim contradicts the initial reports by Manchester police who reported that the attack was carried out by a  suicide bomber. A man suspected of being linked to the attack was arrested on May 23 in southern Manchester.

The police presence has been increased throughout London due to the potential threat of another attack following Monday’s bombing.

Context

On Monday, May 22, at least 22 people were killed and 59 more were injured in an explosion that occurred at the Manchester Arena (located in the northern English city of Manchester) at approximately 22:40 (local time). The incident occurred at the end of a concert being given by pop singer Ariana Grande. Police officers are treating the incident as a terrorist attack carried out by a suicide bomber, who was killed on the spot. The nearby Manchester Victoria railway station was evacuated and will remain closed at least through Tuesday, May 23. Police operations are ongoing and people have been advised to avoid the area surrounding the arena.

This terrorist attack is the biggest since 2005, when 52 people died and 700 others were injured in London’s transportation.
