Belgium: Environmental activists to protest in Brussels on May 4

Climate activists to protest in Brussels, Belgium, from 14:00 May 4. Increased security; localized business, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with the environmentalist group Extinction Rebellion (XR) plan to protest in Brussels on May 4 to denounce EU fossil fuel subsidies. Participants will assemble at Place Jean Rey at 14:00; however, it remains unclear whether protesters will remain at that location or march to other parts of the city. During their previous actions in the Belgian capital, XR activists moved to different locations and engaged in actions to deliberately disrupt traffic.

Authorities will undoubtedly increase security near Place Jean Rey and along major thoroughfare to prevent protesters from blocking traffic. Regardless, localized business and transport disruptions remain likely. Clashes between XR activists, police, and frustrated motorists are possible.

Avoid Place Jean Rey during the afternoon of May 4. Check on the latest road conditions before travel and seek alternative routes to circumvent impacted areas.
